Spanish development group Fadesa has been selected by the Moroccan government in the last phase of a tender to build a resort at Plage Blanche, located in the province of Guelmim.
Fadesa's proposed development involves creating hotel units and holiday villages, as well as leisure facilities, such as a golf course and shopping centre.
Access to the resort will be aided by the presence of the regional airport, which can be reached within less than an hour.
If negotiations with the government are successful, Fadesa, which operates residential developments throughout Spain and Morocco, will be able to press ahead with the development, creating around 9,000 permanent jobs.
Construction will last around eight years, although the first hotel is expected to be open to tourists by 2012
